Find What You’re Seeing

Water Feels Hard Again

Check your salt level and look for hardened salt or a possible salt bridge.

Salt Level Is Not Changing

Hardened salt, low water use, or a system issue may be involved.

System Is Using More Salt Than Usual

A change in household water use or system operation may affect salt consumption.

Water Pressure Has Dropped

A restricted prefilter may be reducing flow.

Prefilter Looks Dirty

A heavily coated cartridge or visible sediment may mean the filter needs attention.

K5 Drinking Water Flow Is Slow or Has Stopped

Check the PureMometer® and your filter service history.

Freezing Weather Is Coming

Check whether any equipment or connected plumbing is exposed to freezing temperatures.

There Is a Boil Order

Follow the official advisory first, then review the guidance for your water treatment equipment.

I Don’t Know Which System or Filter I Have

Find the model number or send us clear equipment photos.

I’m Leaving Town for an Extended Trip

Review your equipment, salt, filters, leaks, and freezing risk before leaving.

Water Softener Salt Care

Your Kinetico water softener needs an adequate supply of approved salt or regenerant to continue treating hardness minerals. There isn’t one refill schedule for every home. Salt use depends on your system, water hardness, household water use, and equipment setup.

Checking the brine tank regularly helps you learn what is normal for your home.

How to Check Your Salt Level

  • Find the brine tank that holds the softener salt.
  • Remove the lid.
  • Check how much loose salt remains.
  • Look for hardened or crusted salt.
  • Check for an unusually high water level or overflowing water.
  • Replace the lid securely.
Some water inside the brine tank can be normal.

Troubleshooting

What Is a Salt Bridge?

A salt bridge is a hardened layer of salt inside the brine tank. It can make the tank look full even though the system cannot use the salt properly.
Signs can include:
  • A hard crust on top
  • Salt staying at the same level for a long time
  • A hollow space beneath the salt
  • Hard-water symptoms returning while the tank appears full
Do not hit the tank or use sharp tools to break hardened salt.

How to Add Salt

Before adding anything, confirm that the salt is appropriate for your Kinetico water softener.
  • Check the current salt level.
  • Look for hardened salt or anything unusual.
  • Confirm you have the correct salt.
  • Pour it in slowly.
  • Avoid filling the tank completely.
  • Clean up spilled salt.
  • Replace the lid.

Do not add pool salt, ice-melting salt, table salt, cleaning chemicals, automotive antifreeze, or other products not approved for water softeners. Kinetico also advises against rock salt.
If you’re unsure which salt or fill level is right for your system, ask before adding it.

Water Softener Prefilter Care

A water softener prefilter captures sediment and visible particles before they reach your system. As material builds up, the filter can restrict water flow.

Warning signs

Signs Your Prefilter May Need Attention

  • Lower water pressure
  • Reduced flow throughout the home
  • A dark or heavily coated cartridge
  • Visible sediment in a clear housing
  • A change in water appearance
  • The filter reaching its recommended service interval
There is no universal replacement schedule. Filter life depends on your cartridge, water conditions, household use, sediment, and equipment.
Before changing a prefilter

Know These Basics First

Make sure you know:
  • Which replacement cartridge you need
  • How to shut off or isolate the filter
  • How to relieve pressure safely
  • How the housing opens and seals
A cartridge that looks like it fits is not necessarily the correct filter.
Never loosen a filter housing that may still be pressurized.
If you cannot identify the correct filter, safely isolate the housing, or stop a leak after reassembly, get help rather than forcing the equipment.

Kinetico K5 Drinking Water Station Filter Care

The Kinetico K5 Drinking Water Station uses replaceable cartridges to maintain drinking water system performance. Kinetico recommends replacing the K5’s replaceable cartridges annually or when reverse osmosis water flow slows or stops, whichever comes first.

Replacement timing

Signs Your K5 Filters May Be Due

  • Slower flow from the drinking water faucet
  • Water flow stopping
  • The PureMometer gauge approaching the bottom
  • Filters reaching their recommended service interval
  • A change in drinking water taste or odor
  • A recent boil order or possible contamination event
Important notes

Order the Right Filters and Follow the Right Process

K5 systems can have different filter configurations. Do not order cartridges based only on appearance.

Kinetico also recommends sanitizing the K5 when its filters are changed. The reverse osmosis membrane is not normally replaced during a routine filter change.

If you change the filters yourself, use the correct cartridges, proper sanitization kit, and instructions for your specific K5 configuration.

After filter replacement and sanitization, Kinetico instructs owners to flush two storage tanks before drinking the water.
If the PureMometer does not reset, the system leaks, or drinking water flow remains slow, get help.

Kinetico Winterization & Freezing Weather

Not every water treatment system needs to be winterized.

The main concern is whether water inside the equipment or connected plumbing could freeze.
Risk factors

Your System May Need Attention If It Is:

  • Outdoors
  • In an unheated garage
  • In a crawl space
  • In a shed or outbuilding
  • Near an exterior wall or strong draft
  • In a vacant home
  • Somewhere the heat may be turned down or off
  • Unused for an extended period during winter
Equipment in a reliably heated, occupied part of the home is generally at lower risk.
Power outages, heating failures, and severe cold can quickly change conditions.
Before freezing weather

What to Check First

Check where your softener, filters, drinking water equipment, tubing, and connected plumbing are located.

If any part may be exposed to freezing temperatures, contact Kinetico of OKC before the freeze.
Do not add automotive antifreeze or other unapproved chemicals to water treatment equipment.
If you think the system has already frozen, do not operate, regenerate, move, open, or disassemble it.
Watch for leaks as it thaws.

What to Do With Your Kinetico System During a Boil Order

A home water treatment system does not automatically make water safe during a boil order.

A water softener, reverse osmosis system, refrigerator filter, or common household filter does not replace instructions issued by your water provider or public health authority.

Follow the official advisory for your location first.
During the advisory

Use Safe Water for Consumption

During a boil-water advisory, use commercially bottled water or properly boiled and cooled water for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, making ice, preparing food, and other activities where water could be swallowed.

Do not assume water from your Kinetico system is safe to drink unless the authority responsible for the advisory specifically approves that treatment method.
After the boil order is lifted

Read the Official Notice First

Depending on the advisory and your equipment, you may need to:
  • Flush household plumbing
  • Discard ice
  • Flush refrigerator lines
  • Replace certain filters
  • Sanitize drinking water equipment
  • Complete other system-specific steps
There is no single restart procedure for every Kinetico system.
If you need help determining what your equipment needs, send us your system model, service address, and information about the advisory.

Identify Your Kinetico Water Treatment System

Knowing which Kinetico system you own makes it easier to find the right filters and supplies and answer maintenance or service questions.

You don’t need to guess.
Can’t find the model?

Send Photos Instead

Take clear photos of:
The complete installation
Each piece of equipment
Every visible label
Plumbing, valves, and tubing
The area where you’re seeing a problem
If you find several numbers, send them all rather than guessing which one matters.

When contacting us, include your service address, what you need help with, when the issue started, and any equipment information you can find.
Where to look

Places to Check for Your Model

Look for labels, stickers, tags, or printed information on:
  • Treatment tanks
  • Control or valve areas
  • Brine tanks
  • Filter housings
  • Reverse osmosis equipment
  • Storage tanks
  • Filter cartridges
Also check:
  • Your owner’s manual
  • Installation paperwork
  • Previous service invoices
  • Filter replacement records
Do not move heavy tanks, disconnect plumbing, or open a pressurized housing just to find a number.

Preparing Your Kinetico System for an Extended Trip

Most Kinetico water softeners do not need a special vacation setting for an ordinary trip because they operate according to actual water use.

Longer absences can require more planning, especially during freezing weather or when the home’s water will be shut off.
Quick pre-trip checklist

Before Leaving

  • Check your water treatment equipment for leaks.
  • Check the brine tank and salt level.
  • Review the condition of your prefilter.
  • Look under the sink for leaks around drinking water equipment.
  • Consider whether freezing temperatures could affect the system.
  • Save your system model and equipment photos.
  • For a longer absence, consider having someone check the property.
Important notes

Avoid Unnecessary Changes

Do not change unfamiliar settings, place the system in bypass, drain equipment, or shut off water to it simply because you are leaving town.
For a seasonal home or property that will sit unused for months, contact us before leaving.
Your equipment may need a system-specific shutdown, winterization, restart, flushing, or sanitization plan.
